The Battle Aspect skill is almost required for Monster Hunters to allow them to deal high amounts of damage more often. The Melee Expertise skill also allows an individual to inflict Control effects on their enemies -- which can be useful for those monsters with immense resilience and toughness. Some Monster Hunters walk on the dangerous side and invest in the Zephyr Aspect, which allows them to dodge more frequently at the cost of a lower HP maximum.

Beyond their fighting skills, Monster Hunters tend toward skills of survival (Survivor and Defiant) and skills of perception (Hunter/Reader). The former enhance their ability to withstand certain types of monsters while the latter allows them to find weaknesses or fight elusive enemies.

Itemization Advice: Monster Hunters should prioritize their weaponry and their armor when upgrading and maintaining their equipment. Item Augments that improve one’s Smite attack or those that grant access to different types of damage -- some Monsters are only vulnerable to specific types of damage.

That said, a Monster Hunter should also invest in defense and in toughness. A downed Hunter is one that cannot slay their foes. Armor and Shields can help immensely in this regard. At the cost of comfort, many Monster Hunters will wear Heavy or Ultraheavy Armor to shrug off spell, claw, and quills.
