Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the Frequently Asked Questions that Game Staff receives from participants. Click on a question to peruse their answer.

  • BTF is the short-hand name for this LARP, also known as “The World Beyond the Fall.” This is a Dark Fantasy, Spellpunk, Post-Apocalyptic LARP that takes place in a world similar to our own but 100 years after a terrible magical cataclysm.

  • LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. You pursue your character’s goals through crafted or spontaneous plotlines and physical adventures in a fictional world provided by a Game Staff and their Game Marshalls.

  • You must be at least 16 years of age to play. We are a mature group and will be doing different adventures (aka “Delves”) that are both physically and mentally demanding.

  • We host our events at several camps in NJ and PA. During the summer months, we will sometimes change camps due to the high demand of camp space. Please check out the Event Info pages on Social Media for more information before each event to make sure you are going to the correct camp.

  • BTF runs for the entire weekend, every other month from January. This means that we have BTF Events in January, March, May, July, September, and November.

Our Events start at 10 PM on Friday and last until 5 AM on Sunday, with Quiet Hours in between. Most of Sunday is spent cleaning up the camp.

Each Event is divided into three Periods, changing “on the 5s” (aka 5PM or 5AM).

    1st Period: 10PM-5AM

    2nd Period: 5AM-5PM

    3rd Period: 5PM-5AM

  • Prismatic Arts and Productions runs BTF LARP and other exciting ventures. This includes a Game Staff of 12 individuals with a combined 68+ years of experience running and playing LARPs. You can identify Game Staff by the pink armband they wear on camp. Please check out the Staff page or contact us via BTFGamestaff@gmail.com for more information.

  • As Game Staff, we will go out of our way to make things as safe as possible for your enjoyment. The last thing we want is to see a player incur an injury. When each Delve (or any physically demanding activity) is set up, the Player’s safety is a primary concern. We also have a first aid kit on camp throughout the weekend along with Staff members who are trained in first aid and CPR.

Vaccination: Participants must show proof of Vaccination and Booster shots in order to attend Events for the first time. Participants will be turned away for not adhering to this requirement. Game Staff will also check participants’ temperature as they come in with infra-red thermometers.

Participants who are sick may be turned away at the entrance to ensure the safety of the other Participants and Game Staff. Event Credit can be transferred in extreme cases like this.

  • Yes! We love having new players come to the game. We are more than happy to answer any questions and make you as comfortable as possible.

  • Bring the attendance fees (unless you have already paid), costuming, in-game weaponry, changes of clothes, and other camping/overnight essentials. A more detailed list is featured here.

  • You need to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to play in this game. Game Staff will require proof of Vaccination upon your first event, physical proof or photograph.

As of Feb 2022, Game Staff requires full Vaccination and a Booster Shot for Participants.

  • Any alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. We will not tolerate drinking on camp. If you are found drinking, drunk, or with bottles or cans during the weekend, you will be escorted from the camp without a refund.

Due to the renter’s restrictions, Smoking/Vaping is prohibited in buildings and most parts of the camp. You can smoke/vape in the parking lots. We ask that you clean up after yourself and throw your cigarette butts in the trash. If butts are found on the ground, the smoking privilege will be revoked.

The properties we rent also prohibit cannabis/marijuana use — we adhere to their rules regarding its usage and will punish violators to the full extent of our jurisdiction, including permanently suspending participants.

  • There are countless places to find anything to wear. You can either buy pieces from Wal-Mart or a thrift store or you can go as far as to buy replicas off of the internet. Ebay and clothing websites are excellent resources. Staff members will be happy to recommend particularly reputable clothing merchants. If you have a specific idea, you can peruse our community via our Facebook Group and our Discord channel for ideas.

  • BTF makes it possible for players to make either a very simple or complex character based upon your own preferences. You can either pick a pre-built archetype from our list and then customize it accordingly, or build one yourself using our ruleset. Please check out the Character Creation page for more information.

  • PC stands for Player Character, and is any character that a player plays. NPC stands for Non-Player Character, and is played by staff or any players on NPC duty. NPCs are usually the antagonists that oppose the PCs, background characters illuminate a situation, or are supporting personnel that assist or guide the PCs.

  • Yes and no. If you choose the Basic Attendance Package ($40), you must provide at least 3 hours of NPCing. You may sign up for your preferred Shift time when you sign-in, although some times offer greater rewards than others.

If you choose the Standard ($60) or the Patron Attendance Package ($80), there is no such requirement. For the latter, you are provided additional rewards.

That said, if you are interested in NPCing, please let us know and we will be more than happy to accommodate you. We always need people who want to NPC all weekend long and offer rewards for PCs who perform an NPC shift of at least 3 hours. Please check here for more NPC information.

  • Yes and no. We require you to clean up your personal area and any mess that you have made over the weekend.

If you are interested in gaining extra XP and Components, please take some time on Sunday to help us clean up.

  • You can visit the online rulebook for any information regarding the BTF’s in-game and out-of-game ruleset.

  • No problem. If you can’t find your answer in the Online Rulebook you can either e-mail BTFGamestaff@gmail.com or post the question on the Discord Channel or the Facebook Group. Staff members will constantly be checking these areas.

  • There are too many to list here, but you can find them in the rulebook. The general aesthetic is of humans in a post-apocalyptic earth, but with many fantastical and technological elements. BTF Humans with Stigmata (special augmentations or gifts) may have other costuming requirements such as fangs, wings, extra eyes, or mechanical parts.

  • Wonderful! Please follow the Pre-Register link for more information.

  • If you are curious as to what sleeping arrangements are at each camp, feel free to contact BTFGamestaff@gmail.com and we’ll be more than happy to help you out and arrange it so that large groups can experience the game together

  • Each group is a case-by-case basis. We strive to include every Player’s character in the plot, so there is no reason a large group wouldn’t also be involved. That said, groups of Players can work together to pursue their own plotlines as a Guild or a group of Guilds.

  • Unfortunately, we cannot give large groups a discount — renting campgrounds and creating props are an expensive venture. Each dollar invested into the game will make the game all that more enjoyable.

  • While some food and drinks will be available, Players are expected to provide their own supplies during the weekend. There will be “Quiet Hours” where game play will slow down or pause to allow Players the time they need to rest or retrieve food.

  • Attendance to a BTF Event is a gift given to those who donate a certain amount to Prismatic Arts and Productions. The cost of the donation and the gift allotted to the donor are as below.

$20 — Full Time NPC only (This may be free on certain months such as November, and January)

$40 — Basic PC (required 3-hour NPC shift plus NPC rewards for doing so)

$60 — Standard PC (no NPC shift required, but can perform a Shift for rewards)

$80 — Patron (No NPC shift required and bonus XP; can perform a Shift for Components)

More info can be found here.

  • Included with an event purchase is a weekend of entertainment, immersion, interaction, and big adventures as well as access to a welcoming and dynamic community, as curated by a Game Staff with several successful games under their belt.

  • Service Points (SVP) is a way for staff to reward the players either for donations or for those players that go the extra mile. Among the other ways that these may be expended, 1000 SVP can be turned in once per Event for 10 XP. More information can be found here.

  • The following are the methods with which one may gain Service Points.

-- Workday (20 SVPs per Hour): When attending a Workday at the behest of Game Staff, you gain 20 SVP per hour. Workdays are events at a specific location where tasks are performed for the benefit of the game. This may include a photoshoot or the creation of props or components alongside Game Staff. Furthermore, this may also include working with Game Staff to assist a camp’s set up or clean up a site on a non-Event happenstance.

-- Other Activities (Variable): Performing or attending certain events or happenstances at the Game Staff’s request may also award SVP. This may include going to a Convention at the Game Staff’s specific invitation and promoting the Game. These occasions may be more or less work-intensive than a Workday, so the SVP per hour awarded for these are more variable.

-- Donations (1 SVP per $1 value [undiscounted] with receipt): Game Staff may request specific items or props as donations from the Player Base. This may be something as simple as Boffer weapons or Spell Packets for NPC use or donated foodstuffs for an in-game feast. Take note that a Donation will not be accepted unless the Game Staff specifically requests for it

  • Yes, but each weapon is permitted on a case-by-case basis. Thrusting with latex weapons is disallowed.

Every single weapon (latex or otherwise) will be inspected upon sign-in and every 6 months afterward.

  • As a private company, Prismatic Arts and Productions, Inc reserves the right to refuse entry to any person except. Game Staff also reserves the right to permanently suspend any participants or would-be participants. Safety is our first priority, and unsafe behavior can lead to bans. Players and participants may be banned for the following reasons (not limited to this list):

    — Endangering the safety of BTF players or Game staff

    — Disrespecting BTF players or Game staff

    — Violating game policies, including but not limited to the drug and alcohol policy

    — Policy, Behavior, and Safety violations

    — Theft of personal or Game property

  • While any Game Staff member can be approached for assistance, our Participant Safety Taskforce is always on site. Game Staff wear a pink armband at all times during game. When the Safety Taskforce is required, look for them or notify any Game Staff of your needs, starting your search with the Staff room or NPCland. For Participant Safety issues that are less pressing, leave a folded index card with a Game Staff request at the corkboard outside the Staff Room.

The Participant Safety Taskforce is led by the following individuals:

Kris C, Jeffrey P., and the rest of their helpers.

Text Contact: You may text 609-468-7112 at any time on site. Please leave your name and contact info.

Email Contact: You may also email BTFparticipantsafety@gmail.com between Events. It is highly recommended that you submit your report as soon as possible after any incident.

If you feel uncomfortable approaching the Participant Safety Taskforce for any reason, you may approach and talk to the other Producer Staff members: Jobert Aquino and Matthew Wagner.

  • While the Game Staff wishes that in-game rewards be primarily from in-game activities (Delves, harvesting, trade, etc), running BTF Events requires an immense amount of effort that is beyond the scope of any Staff member. Instead of requiring Player-wide NPC shifts or Site-wide Clean Up from our Participants, we have elected to make these optional and reward those who assist us.

Subsequently, we have also made those rewards of a significant amount to entice more people to help us, instead of making the entire base suffer by making these activities a requirement.

  • During the Quiet Hours (3am to 9 am; 5pm - 7pm), Staff driven combat will be at a minimum or at specific Delves. Similarly, wandering monsters or outlaws will not attack the townsfolk who are in town during these hours.

However, this is not to say that Players cannot be subject to Player vs Player attacks during these hours. Fortunately, there are in-game ways to ward one’s rest areas from attack or to defend one’s self from ambushes. Participants are encouraged to invest in such methods or to befriend those who have done so.

  • Special Note: The World Beyond the Fall uses “Components” as currency and as reagent props. Rare and Pure Components from Seventh Kingdom IGE LARP are not recognized as legitimate currency — attempts to pass them off as currency will be met with harsh sanctions similar to those given to counterfeiters.

  • The creation of items and certain effects are limited to a Periodic use for several reasons:

Such activities have a logistical burden placed upon Game Staff that can be disruptive to the game’s flow.

    1. PCs with abilities that boost Crafting output become people of import and utility

    2. Less experienced Crafter/Ritualist PCs have a chance to shine, instead of their more experienced peers doing all of the work and receiving all of the currency.

    3. Market Hour becomes of greater usefulness, allowing Game Staff to funnel the logistical strain of Crafting/Rituals into specific times where they can manage it properly.

That said, there are ways to get around the Periodic limit, such as the Mastery skill for that specific kind of Crafting or Ritual or certain Class Aptitudes (e.g. Versatile Artisan). Also, not all Crafting/Magic requires the use of the Craft/Ritual action — creating and applying Brews does not require such an action, as does Strengthening armor or weapons.

  • One of the significant aspects of BTF’s Skill system is how Skills interact with Skill Augments and Step effects. A good rule of thumb is:

    “1 Skill, 1 Augment, 1 Aftereffect”.

Skill Augments (limit 1 per Skill upon use)

Skills may only be affected by one Skill Augment. Augments always require a prefix attached to the Skill or Attack (e.g. “Tempest” Smite, “Forceful” Inspiration, or “Eagle-Eyed” Perception”). Multiple Skills may enhance or affect a Skill, but only ONE of these enhancements may be a Skill Augment.

For example: Bildo Daggins can use the Smite attack from the Melee Fighter skill. He also learned the following skills that can affect Smite:

    • Battle Aspect (Slayer): When certain conditions are fulfilled, you may augment your Smite with “Slayer” to waive the Focus cost for that use

    • Perfect Technique: Augment your Smite with “Tempest” to make additional attacks with it.

    • Melee Expertise: replace the damage you would deal with Smite with a Control effect from a short list.

When using Smite on his enemies, Bildo can either augment Smite as “Tempest Smite” or “Slayer Smite”, but not both. “Slayer Smite” has the benefit of not using up one of his Focus points, allowing him to use it more often. Tempest Smite uses Focus but greatly amplifies the damage output of a Smite.

Melee Expertise can be used with “Tempest Smite” or “Slayer Smite” because it is not an Augment, replacing the damage with a control effect.

Aftereffects (limit 1 per person per effect)

These are triggered effects that happen as a response to using a Skill or to a specific circumstance. These are always explicitly mentioned in the Skill description. For example, the Artful Dodger skill allows the user to gain “Resolve 1” after a use of the Dodge Defense. Similarly, the Deft Deflection skill allows a Character to change the effect of a Piercing attack as a response to that attack.

There are two main rules to Aftereffects:

    (1) A user may only use 1 Aftereffect as a response to a Skill/Circumstance

    (2) Aftereffects never activate other Step effects from the same user.

This means that a Skill may be affected by two or more Aftereffects, if the Aftereffects are from different users.

For example: Jonas is a Counselor with training in the Binder Discipline. He is also blessed with the Eidolonic Stigmata (Dryad).

In the midst of a battle, Jonas uses the Ignite Inspiration skill and augments it with the Floral Bond Trait of his Stigmata. Normally, Ignite Inspiration allows a character to grant “Resolve 3” to one ally.

With the Skill Augment however, Jonas invokes it as “Floral Inspiration” and is able to grant Resolve not only his ally Brock, but also to his son, Rusty (as a Step effect).

Being Warriors with the Ironsoul Bravado Aptitude, Brock and Rusty can use the Bravado Aftereffect to increase the Resolve they gain. Alternatively, they can use Ironsoul Aptitude to turn the Resolve they would have gained to enhance their next melee or ranged attack.

Jonas wants to use the Floral Bond’s ability to Dominate one of his Inspiration targets as an Aftereffect. Unfortunately, he already chose an Aftereffect for this use of Ignite Inspiration. Maybe there will be another opportunity next time.

So, three Aftereffects were used on Floral Inspiration. However, each were used by a different individual. In the example above, Jonas could not use Floral Inspiration, heal two people, and imbue one of them with a Dominate effect because he would be using two Aftereffects. Similarly, Brock could not increase the Resolve he gained AND use Bravado to enhance his next ranged attack.

  • Within the first three Events attended, a Character may choose to rewrite their Player Character’s choices during Character Creation and refund all or any of their XP expenditures. If a Character becomes ineligible for a Skill (e.g. loses prerequisites for it), it is removed from them. This may only happen Once per Character.

However, any Components expended for Training or Crafting/Rituals remain expended.

Otherwise, these choices cannot be changed.

On a similar note, Service Points can be spent to “Forget” a Skill and refund the XP used for it. Components and other resources spent to learn the Skill are not refunded.
