Talon Conclave

Talon Templars, Talonites, Nails

Her Righteous Scourge of Horror and Heretic.

 Let them fear Her Talons,

the Bloody Blades of her Reckoning”

Overview

The Talon Conclave is the largest pillar of the Temple, despite bearing the brunt of their faith’s military casualties. While all Conclaves have military forces that they utilize, the Talons are the official armies of the Templars. In fact, they draw even from other Conclaves in recruits, especially during times of war. Despite the peace of the Armistice, however, they remain continually engaged in training, awarding and augmenting their soldiers against the ever-present horrors of the World beyond the Fall.

Talon Templars are a reflection of this militaristic society. They are often clad in armor and always armed, a true and reliable soldier against their Abyssal foes. Indeed, Talonites are known for martial prowess and pious determination -- a powerful weapon against the enemies of the Temple and of humanity itself.

Symbol

A great sword, jagged and runed, beneath the Hallowed Ziggurat (horizontal). In simpler iconography, this is simply a sword beneath a tapered triangle. The Talon Conclave is associated with Midnight Black, Steel Grey, and the Deep Blue.

Lore: Medium

Talonite lore concerns itself with the traditions and details of a character’s Chapter and the Archfaction’s history and faith. Also required is knowledge of how to act, but the concept of a religious military character is a common enough trope to be familiar to many players.

Aesthetic

A Talonite scout armed like the Saint of Swords herself.

Most Talonites are armored with heavy or ultraheavy armor, with scouts garbed in lighter and more flexible fare. This armor is usually adorned with badges of distinction, trophies of battle, or inscriptions of faith. However, they also tend toward furs and leathers, sometimes purposely stained or displaying battle damage. Their weapons are similarly ornamented. This is especially true for their “Talon Daggers”, ceremonial knives that each Talonite receives or makes as part of their rite of passage.

Outlook

Life at War: These Templars are instilled with a honed vigilance and readiness. This means assessing the strengths of non-allies and allies alike. This also means being prepared for battles by keeping a weapon on the ready or being mindful of entrances and potential ambush locations.

Order in Chaos: Talon Templars are known for their discipline, well-suited to the dictation and following of orders and commands on the battlefield. They tend to be straightforward and blunt with their words, though not necessarily with their strategies and tactics. Similarly, there is a noted tendency among the Talons to quickly follow the orders of a perceived superior and moving alongside allies and brethren.

Talonic Dagger: The culmination of one’s ascendance to a full Talonite is the gifting of their Talonic Dagger. This dagger’s appearance differs immensely between each Talon Templar, reflecting their own personalities, achievements and killing style. Most keep their Talon Daggers on their person, but some hide theirs in a safe space. While having one’s Talonic Dagger upon their person is not necessary, many do and make it a prominent part of their attire.

Straight to the point: Talon Templars do not lack subtlety, but they tend to be direct and concise, conveying as much information in as few words as possible. Though they are sometimes accused of omitting details or context, speed and clarity are foremost in communication. Despite this, the Saints and Martyrs of the Talons have many poets and historians in their ranks writing florid prose about their victories and tragedies -- most Talonites, however, do not indulge unless they are at rest.

Rank and File: One’s rank is important to the Talonites. While this appears to be elitism, the structure of command is of high priority to them, especially in combat or other stressful situations. This means that they will always introduce themselves as their rank or title, so that others in their group know to defer to them or to command them. The usual format is “Title” then “family name”, although “Title” then first name is used when two or more members of the same family name are present. Introductions involve “Title” followed by “Full name”. Those allies who do not identify themselves as Templar are simply called “Citizen” (followed by one of their names) while Templars are usually titled “Templar” or referred to as “Kindred”.

Names

The Talon Conclave are a host with a great number of tribes and cultures, thus lending to a great variety and diversity of peoples and names. What unites and identifies a Talonite, however, is their Conclave title and rank, which is stated first before even their actual name.

Talonites will refer to themselves as Title first then First name then Last/Family Name. For example, Prelate Jeremiah Xu.

Furthermore, some Talonites choose to change their names from their birth or child names when they pass the trials necessary to become a warrior of the Conclave. Sometimes, this name is simply to distance themselves from their immature or non-Templar past while at other times, they take up the name of a Martyr-Saint or a revered ancestor as a form of respect. It is sacrilage to take up the name of one of the Archon-Saints.

Example Saint-Names:

Celestia (Purity and Clarity), Koval (Endurance and Resilience), Akira (Cruelty and Honesty), Namaan (Discipline and Temperance), Singsun (Quickness and Accuracy), Tamarlan (Humility and Bravery) and Vargen (Oath-Keeping and Determination)

Example Names:

  • Apostle Chastain Wright is called Apostle Chastain or simply “Castle” to his allies. He is a bloodied veteran of several battles, including some in the Ember War itself.

  • Talonite Kovalia Howlingdog or “Talonite Kovalia” is a new recruit to the region, having passed her Trial with flying colors and is seeking glory on the battlefield like her late mother before her.

  • Expert Lucarrio Wright is of the same bloodline as his warrior brother but has chosen the life of a Maker instead of a Talonite. Lucarrio has done well for themselves through skill and prestige.

The UnTaloned:

Apprentice: These individuals are trainees and novices on their path to becoming Artisans of their craft. .

Artisan: Individuals whose products and services have been tried and tested.

Expert: A rank granted by the local Grandmaster of that craft. This requires several years of work.

Title/Ranks:

Novitiate: Untested Talonite, sometimes called “Nov” or a “Toe”.

Talonite: Rank and file soldier who has passed their trials.

Apostle: A soldier bloodied and commended for several battles. In a minor position of authority.

Chaplain: A soldier in a position of authority and with knowledge of various religious rites.

Prelate: A soldier in a position of authority over several Apostles and Chaplains. This is the highest non-retired Player Character position.

Example Character Ideas

The following are some character concepts that may be seen from this Conclave. If desired, Feel free to use or alter one of these for your character.

Haunted Monster-hunter: The Talon Conclave has its fill of monster-killers and battle-survivors. However, it would be foolish to think that these events do not take their toll. What horrific visions do these soldiers see when they close their eyes? What haunting regrets do they suffer when they look upon their comrades? These folk hide a scarred soul with a powerful body, but not for ever and not for long.

Suggested Classes: Ranger, Warrior

Soldier of Swords: Perfection and discipline in weaponcraft is what they seek, honed by battle and victory. These Talonites are honed to a razor’s edge to be the Temple’s weapon against the darkness between fires and betwixt the stars. There is more to life beyond the blade and the rifle, however. Perhaps these folk are driven to weaponcraft and discipline because of some past loss or perhaps these individuals simply find themselves at an utter loss when outside their skillset.

Suggested Classes: Builder, Warrior

Tired Campaigner: There are some among the Talon Conclave who are veterans of a hundred battles, having seen and lost too much. The bloodlust has burned out in them and they seek out other pursuits instead, finding solace and talent outside the battlefield. Some of these folk excel with needle and thread while others do well with the forge. More than a few of these old soldiers have learned to use their words instead of their weapons, lending their experiences to others or using their years to their advantage in the battlefield of wordplay.

Suggested Classes: Builder, Counselor

Unorthodox Soldier: Some Talonites believe that not all battles need be fought on the front-lines nor every strike be done in the daylight. After all, in order to be used, supplies must be received or stolen -- only victory matters. However, “dishonor” is poorly looked upon by most Chaptermasters and Invokates. These Templars must take care to never be caught, lest they face the steely judgment of their Conclave.

Suggested Classes: Arcanist, Ranger

Zealous Crusader: The Talon Conclave is known to pair their war skill with their ardent faith, melding the two to form an unstoppable force. These zealous Templars form the blade of the spear, charging forth to engage the enemy in righteous and brutal battle. Some fight with pistol or blade, while a blessed few blast foes aside with purifying flame and scourging shadow. Most continue on this path until death, their faith as unquenchable as a wildfire. But for some, injury or misfortune may cause them to harbor questions or at the very least, caution.

Suggested Classes: Arcanist, Warrior

Leadership

The current Talon-Archon is a Seraph named Kiviuk Mirumoto, a brilliant swordsman and an adept tactician. Stationed in the Talonic Citadel as his predecessor's second-in-command, he succeeded the previous Talon-Archon shortly after she was slain by the Harbingers.

Archon Mirumoto is known to be “eccentric”, prone to disappearing in quiet walks and fits of poetic ranting on paper. However, his hobbies and predilections have endeared him to his troops rather than alienated him. These are aided by the tales of his Warband’s exploits before he was promoted to Invokate -- these stories seem wild and impossible, but they render him well regarded by his subordinates.

This may change however, since his new promotion means that he will spend more time at Ziggurat City and the main temple. Unlike his predecessor, Kiv does not have a commanding presence out of uniform or off the field, nor does he share his brethren’s zealous piety -- this may prove his undoing in the political intrigues that embroil the capitol.

That said, it is believed that the Beringian Blockade is Talon-Archon Kiv’s primary concern. He believes that the near-breach that occurred at the same time as the Infernal Apostasy is no coincidence. Before her demise, Talon-Archon Telestria Hwang personally attended the War over Embers in an attempt to curry favor for an invasion beyond the Blockade. Of course, that dream ended with her death and the damage inflicted by the Apostasy.

 Talon Conclave History

Important Events

The Ravening (0 BTF): The god-like Abyssals are drawn to the planet by humanity’s hubris and their power hungry agents. Though they bring the age of humankind to an end, they are driven away by its true mother and protector -- called the World Dragon, Earth Mother and God-Empress. Despite Her triumph, She is shattered and slain from the innumerous wounds of that terrible battle.

Crowned with Void Fire (17 BTF): The followers of the God-Empress arrive in the Pacific Northwest to protect the human survivors there. Led by their goddess’ Oracle-Avatar, they begin a brutal war against the Flesh-Takers who have been hunting down and flensing any humans that they find.

The First Feast (23 BTF): The Oracle-Avatar and their Templar brethren purge the region of the Flesh-Takers and feast upon the Abyssal remnant that had been corrupting the area. In the Pacific Northwest, they endeavor to build a new society and rally humanity toward their holy goal: the destruction of the Abyssals and their monstrous scions. Saint Talon consumes sanctified Abyssal flesh and is beatified into sainthood and demi-divinity.

The Path of Talons (25 BTF): Saint Talon and her warband lead a growing army north and west on the Oracle-Avatar’s command. They save the communities they encounter and allow them entry into the faith of the God-Empress.

From Chapter to Conclave (35 BTF): The Conclave grows in power and in numbers as they travel. At the end of their long and brutal journey, the Talonic Citadel is established and land is cleared, especially of the deadly Glow Devils. A Shadow Door is established and linked between Ziggurat City and the Talonic Citadel.

The Battle of the Blockade (45 BTF): The Glow Devils return in a massive invasion. They are defeated, the Beringian Blockade is raised, and Saint Talon sacrifices herself to ensure that her Conclave survives.

The Path of Flame (48 BTF): The Talon Conclave assists its Flame Conclave brethren in consolidating the sparse communities east of Ziggurat City. They attempt but fail to build a stronghold in the Great Dakotan Desert but they make allies of the elusive tribes that live there.

The Kookesh Quarry (55 BTF): The Oracle-Avatar sends the Talon Conclave north for this valuable discovery: a massive cadaver of an Eldritch entity. The Talon Conclave begins mining it for powerful reagents, though its corruptive presence is harmful to body and spirit.

The Redtail Rebellion (63 BTF): An insurgent gains power and attempts to take the Quarry for themselves. After many years of eluding the Talonites, Redtail himself is caught and subjected to Eldritch Crucifixion.

Terror from the Deep (74 BTF): Oceanic monstrosities and Pelagic Seraphs raid the Temple’s settlemtns allies on the west coast. This culminates in the attack of a titanic crustacean with a woman’s face in its shell. After a devastating rampage, the Oracle-Avatar destroys it alongside their Templar Conclaves. Saint Skull defends the Oracle-Avatar from attack at the cost of his life.

A Warning to the South (83 BTF): The Templar continue to consolidate their northeastern holdings and treat carefully with the Free Tribes. Their first encounter with the Illustrados Union is a bloody one, stopping short of igniting actual war. Instead of pursuing conflict, the Templars look to their Oracle-Avatar for guidance and receive orders to return north.

War and Apostasy (90 BTF): Terrible monstrosities led by the sorcerous Harbingers invade and ravage Mid-Atla. The vicious war against the remnants of humanity follows. The Templar was prepared by the Oracle-Avatar’s warning, but an attempted coup by the Flame Conclave undoes their efforts -- they join the battles against the Harbingers at a diminished capacity while dealing with this new “Infernal Apostasy”

The Armistice at Libertina (96 BTF): After six years of brutal war, Mid-Atla has settled to a troubled peace. The Harbingers have been destroyed and a treaty between the Templar, the Illustrados, and the Free Tribes has been signed at the broken bell of Libertina City.

Current Day (99 BTF): The Temple is rebuilding after the many disasters that have befallen their holdings across the continent. They seek out the leaders of the Infernal Apostasy that betrayed them and to bring the Free Tribes into the fold for their holy mission.

Important Individuals and Groups:

Abyssals/the World-Slayers: The enemies of the God-Empress and of all terrestrial life - alien, netherworldly god-things from beyond the stars.

The Cascadian Dragon: A titanic crustacean-like entity that eradicated several settlements from the west coast. It was proof against all weapons and the human-sized face in the center of its mass turned soldiers into shriveled corpses. It was slain by the Oracle-Avatar. Saint Skull sacrificed his life to protect them.

The Free Tribes: A group of communities and tribes based in and around the Mid-Atlantic (aka Mid-Atla) area, but also within the New England, Tidewater, and Midwest regions.

God-Empress: The prime divinity of the Templars. Also known as the Shattered Mother, the World Dragon, and the Earth Mother. Through Her sacrifice, the world saw ruin but not destruction from those that would devour it.

The Harbingers/Harbinger Hosts: Four sorcerous entities of incredible power and the monstrous armies that followed them. They came from the west and savaged their way to Mid-Atla until they were stopped by the combined efforts of the Free Tribes, the Illustrados, and the Temple.

The Illustrados Union: An Caribbean-based Archfaction known for their technological wonders, their mercantile bent, and their naval prowess

Oracle-Avatar: The chosen speaker to the God-Empress and the Temple’s leader. After the formation of the Templars, they rarely leave their meditations atop Ziggurat City. They were integral to the Harbingers’ defeat but were severely injured.

Saint Carmine/Carmine Conclave: An Archon-Saint known for her cunning, her diplomacy, and her ability to turn enemies into allies. Also called the Saint of Roses. Founder of the Carmine Conclave. Disappeared after her spouse was slain.

Saint Flame/Flame Conclave/Infernal Apostasy: An Archon-Saint known for his power, his knowledge, and his blazing zealotry to the God-Empress. Also known as the Saint of Wrath. Founder of the now extinct Flame Conclave. Slain while fighting the Night Kings. His Conclave would turn against the Temple and attempt to kill the Oracle-Avatar.

Saint Skull/Skull Conclave: An Archon-Saint known for his mercy, his protectiveness, and his iron devotion to the Oracle-Avatar. Founder of the Skull Conclave. Slain fighting the Cascadian Dragon.

Saint Talon/Talon Conclave: An Archon-Saint known for her strength, her sorcery, and her unflinching bravery. Also known as the Saint of Swords. Founder of the Talon Conclave. Slain during the Battle of the Blockade

Saint Whisper: An Archon Saint known for her incredible willpower, her complete faith, and her sacrifice at the First Feast. She was also known as the Saint of Shadows. She did not start any Conclaves but some of the Skull Conclave devote themselves to her.

The Temple of the Shattered Mother (aka Templars): An northern Archfaction based on their faith to the God-Empress and dedicated to the destruction of wickedness and eldritch evil.

Talon Conclave Power Groups

Power Groups are organizations, orders, and other social groups that have great influence over the workings of a Faction. In the Talon Conclave, the seven Synodic Chapters of the Talon Conclave are the main groups of influence and significance.

Except for the Sin-Eaters, Player Characters may come from any Power Group although they cannot be the leadership of that group. It is recommended that those willing to write backstories intertwined with the Synodic Chapters contact Game Staff for further information/guidance.

Similarly, it is the requirement of Game Staff that Players who create their own Chapter as part of their backstory submit a profile of that group to Game Staff (for further use in plot if need be).

The Dragontooth Chapter: The Archonic Chapter of the Talon Conclave and the personal instruments of the Talon-Archon. They are known for their fearlessness and their adherence to honor.

The Ghost Wolf Chapter: Patrollers and wardens of the highways between the western and eastern coasts of the Temple.

The Godhammer Chapter: The eastern strength of the Talon Conclave, derived from the region’s recruits. They are wild and proud monster-hunters, brazen with their trophies and their hunts.

The Sea Serpent Chapter: The largest of the southern Chapters with the strongest fleets.

The Sin-Eater Chapter: A policing body within the Conclave, staffed by inquisitors, spies, and executioners. This is NPC only.

The Steel Chalice Chapter: The keepers of the Kookesh Quarry and the jailors of the conscripted miners. Clad in eldritch and radiation protection gear, they are regarded as cruel and sadistic.

The Wall Warden Chapter: The guardians of the Blockade and the Temple’s western land border. They are stalwart and resolute, known for defensive tactics, use of siege weapons, and eldritch gadgetry.

The Dragontooth Chapter

Dragonteeth

“We are the wrath of the World Dragon.

Let it through us that blood be split”

Basic: The Archonic Chapter of the Talon Conclave and the personal instruments of the Talon-Archon. They are known for their fearlessness, their discipline, and their adherence to honor.

Symbol: An equilateral triangle pointed upward. Two crossed swords are upon it, their hilts on the outside of the triangle.

Territory: Talonic Citadel and the surrounding communities. They also have Archonic influence on all other Talonic territories.

Overview: The Dragontooth Chapter is the biggest it has been in decades, swelling with new Talonites, scion Chapters, and influence more than ever before. With control of the Talonic Citadel and surrounding holdings remaining in the grasp of the Chapter, there remains a sense of stability that is sorely needed in the current era. Their main goal is to secure this stability and extend it across the Conclave and its territories while rooting out any Infernal Apostates that they discover. Much of the Talon Conclave was spent in the Ember War and the Apostasy, so rebuilding and rearming their soldiers is also a priority objective.

For now, the Chapter enjoys positive influence from the Invokates, from the Oracle-Avatar, and from the Conclave in general. That said, Archon Mirumoto is not above sending Talonites from his Chapter to assist in the rest of the Conclave’s needs. Some believe that this is unneeded micromanagement or information gathering on his part, but it is agreed that the presence of a Dragontooth is better than a Sin-Eater.

Leadership: Archon Kiviuk Mirumoto may be the leader of the Talon Conclave and the Dragonteeth, but it is Hierophant Ivanov who handles the day-to-day dealings of the Chapter. The Hierophant has been in his position for thirty years, soldiering on and outliving his detractors and their criticism. His injuries from the Infernal Apostasy ensure that he does not move far from the Citadel anymore, but he has rarely left his administrative post in the years of his tenure except to direct troops in battle.

For his own part, Archon Mirumoto prefers to be out on the field, destroying monstrosities as his Chapter’s namesake. However, the dictates of administration demand his presence -- he spends time managing his subordinates or patrolling bases instead. He is proficient at woodcarving and has taken to leaving his projects at the bases he visits from time to time, usually small carvings of local fauna. The jury is out however, as to whether his carving during meetings is trivial, relaxing, or intimidating.

The Ghost Wolf Chapter

Ghost Wolves

“We are the relentless pack of the Goddess

Let those who defy her never find respite from our fangs”

Basic: Patrollers and wardens of the highways between the western and eastern coasts of the Temple. They are riders and tamers of para-fauna, wearing the furs and leathers of their animal allies.

Symbol: An upward facing sword crossed with a leftward facing crescent moon

Territory: They have Chapterhouses across the Path of Flames and the Path of Talons. Their primary Chapterhouse is in Oxtown.

Overview: The Ghost Wolves have always been the salt of the earth -- rugged individuals from the villages and communities liberated by Saint Talon in her northward march. Though they venerate the God-Empress and her Oracle-Avatar, the Ghost Wolves have always continued in their ancient pre-Fall beliefs and practices. The long years and strange times have twisted these rites almost beyond recognition, but the old traditions and stories still exist -- the Long Fall be damned.

No titanic, gigantic victories grace the histories of the Ghost Wolves, but their records bear the weight of a thousand triumphs and hard lessons. They are close to the land and its beasts, finding allies and mounts among the latter. These were not the augmented beasts of the Flame Conclave’s work but powerful comrades against otherworldly threats.

This, of course, was in addition to the widening of their responsibilities -- they and their scion Chapters now had to safeguard the Path of Flames as well as the Path of Talons.

Leadership: Invokate White River leads the Ghost Wolf Chapter, working closely with other smaller Talonite Chapters in maintaining the Paths of Talons and of Flame. He is a survivor of many a deadly battle and brutal winter. So grievous were his injuries during a battle during a blizzard that his arm and nearly his leg required amputation, the injury resisting even magical healing. His Chapter called him “Old Hookhands” ever since, though he only smiles at that name when it is spoken by his soldiers or his friends.

It is no secret that he is not comfortable with his position as Invokate, preferring the open road or even the administration of his Chapter over his new responsibilities. There can be no doubt that he takes his new role seriously however -- the Talon-Archon has few complaints about the roadways.

Hierophant Leaf Sun is his spouse and his envoy to the Invokate Synod for most purposes. Leaf Sun is more personable and politic between the two, though these traits are considered weakness among the Ghost-Wolves.

The Godhammer Chapter

Godhammers

“Let the heavens quake and the earth shiver,

The Hammers of the God-Empress are upon you!”

Basic: The eastern strength of the Talon Conclave, derived from the region’s recruits. They are wild and proud monster-hunters, brazen with their trophies and their hunts.

Symbol: An upward pointing sword struck by lightning. Smaller thunder bolts radiate from its sides.

Territory: Their main Chapterhouse is in Innsmouth in New England. They are expected to provide assistance across the entirety of the Temple’s East Coast operations, especially in Mid-Atla.

Overview: The Godhammers, sometimes called the Hammers of the Goddess, trace their lineage to the Imperial Spears -- one of the greatest of the Chapters before their collapse. While they have had their share of victories, this Chapter did not receive much prestige until recently.

Their exploits and triumphs during the Ember War brought them back into the front lines and into Archonic overview. Their tactics were wildly effective against Union and Free Tribe, especially as they were willing to adapt new tactics or new troops. The Sin-Eaters have gazed upon them unkindly for their use of mercenaries, Evictus, and other “irregulars” -- as well as their willingness to recruit from the local populace without the proper rituals or “education”.

They are incredibly diverse in their tactics and specialties, more than willing to engage in unorthodox warfare and very experienced with battling human forces. Some of their Warbands even allow non-Talonites in their ranks, an uncommon but accepted practice in the fringes of Conclave society. This allows them an operational influence greater than their actual size could manage, at the cost of precision and reputation.

However, the lack of repute has rarely bothered the Godhammers. They are pious and they are deadly -- those are the only two things they truly care about. They have a fierce love for battle, barely slaked by the troubled spots in the region. Rumors of overreach has brought the ire of the Sin-Eaters and the Talon-Archon to the Godhammers, but they continue to operate as before. Some Chapters have voiced their fear that the Godhammers’ brazen behavior might shatter the three-Fold Armistice and ignite war.

Leadership: Invokate Noonak McCallahan leads the Godhammers in their holy mission of pacification. Like many of his rank, he is an old hand at war and bloodshed. It was his leadership and his idea to bring the Godhammers out to the eastern coast, far away from the other Chapters.

He is said to be mad, speaking to the God-Empress or some invisible being when there is no one around. But his faith in the Talon-Archon and the Oracle-Avatar is unswerving. Noonak was beside the Oracle-Avatar when they destroyed the Harbingers -- standing unflinching between the leader of his faith and utter oblivion. Perhaps he has been made madder by the experience, but it has yet to affect his leadership skills or his competence thus far.

The Sea Serpent Chapter

Sea Serpents

“Her blood is the seas, givers and takers of life

So too are we, saviors and slayers both”

Basic: The largest of the southern Chapters with the strongest fleets. Many are Seraphs and Chimera that are at home beneath the water as they are riding their fleet above it, wearing lighter armor and carrying spears and harpoons.

Symbol: A trident facing upward.

Territories: Their main Chapterhouse is in Port Sacrament, but they have Chapterhouses across the continental west coast, and some isolated way-ports on the southern continent.

Overview: The Sea Serpents trace their lineage back to a community near the Talonic Citadel that was rescued and converted by Saint Talon. The ancestors of this Chapter were tasked with discovering and converting any communities along the coastline. They constructed a Chapterhouse within the survivors of an island city, allowing them to continue their mission and protect the oceanic fringes of the Conclave.

The Sea Serpents of the modern era are a little different from their Talonite siblings, primarily due to their naval strengths and their willingness to trade rather than fight. Through much of the latter, this Chapter has strengthened their fleets and ascended to one of the Talonic Synod.

Leadership: Invokate Noota Akira is the current Chaptermaster of the Sea Serpents, though her Seraphic Stigmata makes her look more like a shark than a serpent. The Chaptermaster has a fierce love of seafaring and exploration, though her current position prevents her from doing much of either. However, her preferences are reflected in her Chapter’s focus in charting the western coast, venturing even to the continent to the south for lost technology or magical components.

Their clashes with the Illustrados on the western front are well-documented, but the Invokate has come away from the Ember War with some respect for her former enemies and their sailing traditions. Controversy has sprung up with regards to Sea Serpents trading with Illustrados ports in the south, but the profits delivered to the Conclave has stymied actual protests so far.

The Sin-Eater Chapter

Sin-eaters

“Let the vile, the unholy, and the unrepentant come to us

For we are the hungry-toothed justice of the God-Empress”

Basic: A policing body within the Conclave, staffed by inquisitors, spies, and executioners. They seek out not only apostates but also law breakers within the Talonite ranks. They work very closely with the Skull Conclave and many are users of magic.

Special Note: The Sin-Eaters may only be played by NPCs.

Symbol: An upward pointing sword with four bird wings.

Territory: They have Chapterhouses in Talonic Citadel, Rachat, and Ziggurat City. The latter is their main Chapterhouse.

Overview: The Sin-Eaters’ search for heresy and sin is unceasing, unpopular, and unforgiving. Despite their status, Sin-Eaters expect resistance and even hostility at every turn of their duties, which not only include investigating reports of misconduct but also yearly rounds among the Talonite territories.

Sin-Eaters are always found in groups of two or three, although they may employ help from outside their Chapter for protection or other tasks. They often request this help in private, because helping the Sin-Eaters is poorly regarded by the rest of the Conclave in general. The exception to this is when the threat involved is too big for the Chapter to handle -- in these cases, they conscript local Chapters to their assistance.

With no territories of wealth, the Sin-Eaters receive their operational funding from the Talon and the Skull Conclaves. It is also believed that they are rewarded for confiscating and submitting illicit material. This has led to rumors of Sin-Eaters bribed to look away or pocketing illicit material to plant on innocent parties -- these ideals only stoke the fires of discontent against them.

For their own part, the Sin-Eater Chapter must police itself. Calling upon the Talon-Archon or the Skull Conclave is considered a last resort. The legendarium of the Chapter is not subtle about the fates of heretics within their ranks, though they do not advertise the existence of these sinners to outsiders.

Leadership: For the past twenty years, the Chaptermaster of the Sin-Eaters has been Invokate Rylisk. A skilled Seer with an Eidolonic Graft, it is believed that nothing in a room escapes his gaze. His own success and survival on the field has earned him his position from among his Chapter, although he is likely the most hated man in the Conclave for his efforts and his blunt demeanor.

Despite his opinions and reputation, he is beloved by those within the Sin-Eaters. They are of the opinion that he fights tooth and nail for the safety of his Talonites, not only putting forth procedures for their protection but smashing heads with other Invokates and Hierophants to allow them to do their duties to the Conclave. Even the Talon-Archon has tasted blood by dealing with Invokate Rylisk, but the ability of the Sin-Eaters to call upon the Skull Conclave for political influence makes them quite influential and potent.

The Steel Chalice Chapter

“Let us all serve the God-Empress

By blade and by labor, without want or mercy”

Basic: The keepers of the Kookesh Quarry and the jailors of the conscripted miners. Clad in eldritch and radiation protection gear, they are regarded as cruel and sadistic. However, their ranks possess master artisans of living and eldritch armaments.

Symbol: A diamond with three lines within a triangle

Territory: The Kookesh Quarry, surrounding encampments, and the road to the Quarry. They also have a Chapterhouse in Talonic Citadel.

Overview:  The Steel Chalice of modern times are rarely seen outside the domains of the Quarry, but their Chaptermaster is always on the lookout for more opportunities. They are cold and precise soldiers, acclimated to following instructions to the letter and descending into hazardous situations. They will ruthlessly execute or forsake “contaminated” individuals when ordered to do so, knowing and expecting the same treatment from their brethren.

The Chapter’s value to the Conclave and even the Temple as a whole has ascended them to the Invokate council of the Talonites, granting them a voice in the Conclave’s direction. They are one of the more recent additions to the Talonite Invokates, with only the Godhammer Chapter being newer.

The Steel Chalice are also a Chapter with controversy. Rumors allege that they sell the “Flesh of the Empress”' to third parties, though the Sin-Eaters have yet to find any evidence of this damning heresy. Their treatment of conscripts and prisoners is also of some concern to the Conclave, though the Chaptermasters of the Steel Chalice have always claimed to optimize protections. Indeed, those prisoners who finish their sentences and conscripts that work out their deployments are rewarded generously by the Steel Chalice, with some even offered a place in their ranks.

Also of interest is the development of living weaponry in the hands of Steel Chalice weaponers. With their access to Abyssal Flesh, this Chapter is better able to experiment with new methods and products of crafting with that strange material. Naturally, their progress in this matter requires oversight from the Skull Conclave.

Leadership: Invokate Cora Sparak leads the Steel Chalice Chapter, promoted after her predecessor died from an Abyssal-borne disease that somehow escaped containment. She is said to be more ruthless than her late sibling, personally performing executions for those who breach containment procedures. There are even rumors that claim that she only strengthened protective measures for miners after the threat of a Sin-Eater audit.

Invokate Sparak’s main priorities are in maintaining and improving the Quarry’s output, even consulting outside “experts” in the matter. This does not bode well for the Makers and the conscripts tasked with extraction. However, she is distracted by recent volcanic activity in the area; she has doubled patrols to ensure that whatever monstrosities that emerge from beneath the earth do not disturb Steel Chalice operations.

The Wall Warden Chapter

Wall-Wardens

“We are the Shield of the Conclave

Let our enemies strike us and be broken”

Basic: The guardians of the Blockade and the Temple’s western land border. They are stalwart and resolute, known for defensive tactics, use of siege weapons, and eldritch gadgetry. Many Wall Wardens employ some kind of eye-protection, such as goggles, when battling their primary foes at the Blockade.

Symbol: An upward facing sword against a brick wall.

Territory: The Beringian Blockade and the surrounding mining and farming communities.

Overview: Like the Blockade itself, the Wall-Warders have changed little in the decades following the their creation. Certainly, there are operational and defensive upgrades, but the Chapter is as solid and stable as the wall it defends.

The Wall-Warders themselves are a grim people, used to facing almost daily casualties from the skirmishes at the Blockade or beyond it. This constant attrition drove the Chapter to seek out the right to conscript outside their home region. They are not particular, accepting even criminals or Evictus into their ranks -- though these may find themselves manning the wasteland watchtowers or the Blockade itself.

Despite the wealth of resources in the area and resources from Talonic Citadel, the Wall-Warders are always seeking out more -- whether it is soldiers, weapons,  or supplies. This fuels rumors that the Wall-Warders are willing to turn a blind eye to criminal activities that benefit them. Indeed, the Talonites of this Chapter tend to care more for results than the “journey”.

Leadership: Invokate Jon-Paul Harpak currently leads the Wall Wardens as Chaptermaster. As Invokate, he also manages the Beringian Blockade and the surrounding communities. He has attained his position through the respect of his peers and his own commanding skills. He is a survivor of over a dozen Blockade defenses and more than a hundred expeditions into the Glowing Wastes.

Invokate Harpak is a Chimera with ursine features, lending him the name “little bear” when he was younger and “old bear” in his current age. He tolerates both nicknames, but his anger is just as well-known as he is. Far from making him an unreliable general, this trait allows him to push his troops and his Makers to whatever the Chapter currently needs.

Talon Conclave Religion and Rites

Much like the other Templars, the Talon Conclave is bound to their faith in the God-Empress. Each Talonite is expected to be pious and faithful, pledged to the Temple’s holy crusade against the monsters that haunt the World Beyond the Fall.

Talonite FaithS

  • Awakened, Avatara, Wakers

OVERVIEW: The God-Empress is described in the myths and the scriptures of the Temple in many different ways. Regardless of Her form, she is an entity of boundless love for humanity, even at their worst and their most proud. In some texts, she is a many-armed and many-eyed humanoid goddess. In others, she is a sinuous, serpentine dragon wreathed in clouds and in glory.

However, despite her feelings for humanity, Her power and aspect is beyond the reaches of human imagery. Many scriptures described Her as a veiled, hooded figure whose true presence would shatter the minds of any who looked upon it -- even her Chosen Children.

Because of this, the Temple usually draws Her symbol as such: two Equilateral triangles, one inside the other. The outer triangle radiates power and is encompassed by a runed circle.

SYMBOL: The Oracle-Ziggurat -- the Hallowed Ziggurat of the Templars.

SHRINE TYPE: Hallowed Shrines built to the Temple may be of the following -- Ancestral, Deep, Primal

TENETS: Below are the primary commandments of the Templars, though in truth, the Awakened rely more on the Sins to guide their actions.

    — The Tenet of Supremacy: The God-Empress is All, let no one stand against Her or her Temple.

    — The Tenet of Nurturing: Humans are the Children of the God-Empress and the Templar are Her Chosen. The Templar must protect, instruct, and hone Humanity for the Last Reaping.

    — The Tenet of Purging : The Human Race must be nurtured but the Final Ravening will soon be upon us. Those who defy the Temple or work with the Abyssals must be left behind.

SINS AND ATONEMENTS: The following are the Archsins -- crimes and misdeeds that are punishable by the Temple. Atonements for these sins are given by a presiding judge, usually a cleric of sufficient stature provided that the necessary punishments or mortifications are served.

    — Blasphemy is committed when an Awakened defiles a holy object or speaks profane of the God-Empress or her Oracle-Avatar.

    — Defilement is the unlawful destruction of other Wakers’ property or using unlawful methods to destroy one's own property.

    — Heresy is committed when an Awakened directly goes against the authority of the God-Empress and Her Oracle-Avatar.

    — Malfeasance is the unlawful harm or slaying of another Templar. This includes psychic and physical injury including soul-binding and illicit torture.

    — Malifica is illicit magic-use. Magic is the gift of the God-Empress and Awakened who wield it must be mandated by the Temple or be servants of the God-Empress herself.

    — Perjury is when an Awakened breaks a holy oath or lies to the Temple.

WORSHIPERS: Faith in the Shattered Mother is the Templar’s state religion. While joining the faith is not a requirement of Templar society, its tenets inform state policy and higher offices are often Enkindled in this faith. Thus, the Templar Archfaction are the main worshippers of this faith. However, it does have adherents beyond the Templars themselves, among the Cartel and other smaller communities in Mid-Atla.

Worshippers are call themselves the Awakened although outsiders have been known to colloquially call them “Wakers”.

CLERGY: The clerics and priests of the Temple are collectively called “the Archonate”, though they do not always directly serve the Archons of their Conclave. Sorcerous abilities are a requirement for the Archonate, be they inborn magicians or forged through an imbued Stigmata.

These religious folk serve as spiritual guides and ritual leaders for their communities when it comes to official Templar dictum. Among the theocratic Skull and Talon Conclaves, the Archonate serve supervisory and even governing roles depending upon their rank and position.

In communities where the Templar faith is but one of many, the Archonate are leaders of their people but they do not claim to command any religious respect where secularism or heathen faiths have sway. Still, the concentrated support and training available to Archonate members allow them perspectives or even education that is worthy of a leadership or guidance role.

LEADERSHIP: The Templars and Awakened are led by the Oracle-Avatar, who is both religious and secular leader of their people. They task the faithful toward the defense of humanity and the exaltation of their God-Empress. However, their direction and their dictum tend toward infrequency and toward general practices, allowing their subordinates a measure of free rein. This is made all the more true by the crippling injuries they suffered from their sorcerous battle against the Harbingers.

Directly beneath the Oracle-Avatar, the Talon-Archon and the Skull-Archon are the leaders of their Conclaves in matters of faith, battle, and civics. The Carmine Conclave differ from their brethren in their own separation of church and state. The wealthy Cabals are expected to serve the Archonate clergy and the Carmine-Archon within the Conclave (who in turn, serve the Oracle-Avatar).

  • OVERVIEW: The Silent Raven is a Whisper of fate, death, and renewal. In visions and dreams, it appears as a spectral raven or its presence is simply heard as a rush of feathers and a caw. In olden times, the raven was a favored servant to gods and spirits. After the Long Fall, it continues its task of ferrying souls to their resting place and serving as a warning to the observant.

SHRINE TYPES: Ancestral, Deep, and Storm

SYMBOL: A raven with an eyeball in its beak.

    — Tenet 1: Respect the cycle of life and of death: This means sending those who defy Death into the Silent Raven’s judgment -- these defiers are usually abominations of unlife or those who propagate such monsters. This also means never killing unless absolutely necessary.

    — Tenet 2: Keep the memory of the dead -- Many Death Takers are performers of funeral rites, ensuring that the deceased are remembered and celebrated (or cursed, if they were wrongdoers). This Tenet also means being respectful to every creature that is slain, both friend and foe.

SIN: Obstruction -- For the Silent Raven, preventing it from taking what is their due and disrupting the cycle of death and life is the greatest of Sins. Certain greater Necrotheurgies, soul-destroying magics, or similar acts are examples of such Sins.

WORSHIPERS: Some of the Ghost Wolf Chapter and some of the Chapters along the Path of Flame.

CLERGY: The Raven Speakers are the shamans of the Silent Raven. These individuals preside over funerals and births. Depending on the community, they may also serve as healers to delay death from the faithful and lorekeepers, recording the lives and deaths of their people.

The God-Empress

The God-Empress is described in the myths and the scriptures of the Temple in many different ways.

Creation myth

It is known by all Templars that the universe is but one of many and our planet is a single grain within a nigh-infinite desert. Yet within this vastness, humanity is unique for they are the children of the God-Empress.

The Templars call her the Earth Mother, the All-Goddess, or the World Dragon. She has always watched over Her scions. Indeed, every ancient myth has a spark of Her shadow within it, such is Her mark upon the Human Race.

With Her power, She who is All made stars and space and planets but proudest was She of Her greatest Children.

The World Dragon was but one divinity against many during the Ravening, but She fought for Her children with the strength of a thousand Gods. These World-Slayers were born of chaos and power, yet they coveted what the God-Empress possessed or else sought to destroy it all in their hatred. From the depths of space, they bent unwitting humans to their cause and allowed themselves to be summoned by these fools.

The Oracle-Avatar and the Archon-Saints were the last remnants of an ancient order that fought these heretics and worshipped the God-Empress. With the defeat of the Awakened Temple came the Ravening and the Long Fall of the world into ruin.

Humanity was slain by the millions when the Abyssals defiled the skies with their abominable forms. The earth and seas shivered -- drowned millions more in floodwaters or riven stone. Even the greatest weapons that the ancient sciences had brought to bear simply wounded the Abyssals -- many of these arrows were deflected by foul Arcana into the brightest cities of the Earth. Worse yet, the very presence of the Abyssals fractured reality, allowing lesser entities to invade the world.

Yet, hope was not lost. The God-Empress battled these fell godlings for the fate of Her children. This titanic battle was waged across the face of the planet and entire cities were ravaged in its wake. Ultimately, the She who is All was victorious but at a massive cost: her greatest Aspect fell dead from its grievous injuries even as the Abyssals shattered and scattered with their prime aspects banished into a reality between realities.

Tenets of the Faith

The Sanctified Temple of the Shattered Mother exists for one reason: to prepare humanity for the next war against the Abyssals and their spawn. This war must be fought by humans and humans alone, with their faith in the All-Goddess to guide them.

To that end, all Templars must follow the Commandments below:

  • The Tenet of Supremacy: The God-Empress is All, let no one stand against Her or her Temple.

  • The Tenet of Nurturing: Humans are the Children of the God-Empress and the Templar are Her Chosen. The Templar must protect, instruct, and hone Humanity for the Final Ravening/Last Reaping.

  • The Tenet of Purging : The Human Race must be nurtured but the Final Ravening will soon be upon us. Those who defy the Temple or work with the Abyssals must be left behind.

In addition, the following are the Arch-Sins -- crimes and misdeeds that are punishable by the Temple.

  • HERESY is committed when a Templar directly goes against the authority of the God-Empress and Her Oracle-Avatar. This primarily refers to seditious or treasonous activity, and disobeying a direct order from a Hierophant or Archon.

  • BLASPHEMY is committed when a Templar profanes a holy object or speaks profanely of the God-Empress or her Oracle-Avatar.

  • DEFILEMENT is the unlawful destruction of other Templars’ property or using unlawful methods to destroy one's own property. To a lesser degree, this is also committed when an Templar takes or misuses what does not belong to them. It also covers the misuse of others' property and the evasion of tithes to the Temple.

  • MALIFICA is illicit magic-use. Magic is the gift of the God-Empress and Templars who wield it must be mandated by the Temple or be servants of the God-Empress herself. Malifica also includes using relics or magics deemed forbidden by the Temple. Harmful or corruptive association with certain baleful entities is considered to be both Malifica and Heresy.

  • MALFEASANCE is the unlawful harm or slaying of another Templar. Certain Templar are exempt from this Arch-Sin within the auspices of their profession, although they often perform Penances in their off-hours to cleanse any stain on their soul.

  • TREACHERY is when a Templar breaks a holy oath or lies to the Temple. Other examples of Treachery includes failing to protect those you have sworn to protect, disobeying a direct order from your superiors or misusing those under your command.

Life Rites

As a culture steeped in martial tradition and in faith, high ranking officers in the Talon Conclave also serve as its clergy and officiants when it comes to their daily lives. These individuals officiate funerals, oversee rites of passage, and lead prayers to the God-Empress.

In the absence of high-ranking officers such as Prelates or Hierophants, Talonites of the Chaplain rank are often relied upon to officiate Sacraments and lead prayers. Indeed, some Warbands and Chapters have specific Chaplains whose presence and speech has made them ritual leaders -- even when superior officers are in attendance.

In times of desperation or scarcity of Chaplains, the most senior Talonite or the most charismatic Talonite leads the Sacraments and prayers.

Furthermore, the Skull Conclave is well-respected among the Talonites. If they request it, they are allowed to officiate Sacraments and lead prayers -- provided that their rank is of Anchorite or higher. While the Talonites are technically within their rights to decline such a request, courtesy demands that the Skull Templar be allowed their wishes.

Sacrament of Awakening

Talonite superstition holds that the Abyssals might seek out and abduct the spirits of ancient Talonite heroes before they can be reborn to serve the Temple once more. In the wilder regions of the world, this may hold some physical truth as some etheric monstrosities are drawn to the act of childbirth, because they feed on children or the Sacrament itself. Thus, for Talonites (as opposed to the UnTaloned), the presence of a Cradle-Shield (or three) is important. This role is usually the child’s father, the mother’s partner, or a close member of the mother’s warband present for the birth, with arms and armor. This is considered a mark of personal attachment for the mother and the child, akin to a god-parent.

When a child is born within the Talon Conclave, it is a time of rejoicing and of thanksgiving to the God-Empress. The mother is honored and given reprieve from her trials.

The Sacrament of Awakening consists of three portions, performed by the mother or her Cradle-Shield:

The First Severing: The umbilical cord is cut with a Talonic Dagger usually belonging to the mother or the Cradle-Shield. Immediately thereafter, the child or children are bathed with salt-water, which represents the blood of their ancestors and of the Goddess of All.

The First Vigil: The Cradle-Guard must guard the mother and child as they rest. In some Chapters, there are ceremonies wherein masked actors attempt to breach a door through force or words and the Cradle-Shield or mother must prevent their entry. In some territories of the Conclave, this is a quieter and grimmer affair without actors -- they simply await and battle monstrosities as they come (if they come at all).

The First Awakening: During the battle or at the end of it, the mother or Cradle-Shield prays aloud to the God-Empress for protection and for strength. In ceremonies with the masked actors, these are usually their cue to retreat or for their bodies to fade away.

Trial of Talons

The Trial of Talons is a Sacramental rite that must be undertaken and survived three times. In each Trial, a group of Novitiates (5-10 individuals) must successfully hunt down a horrific monstrosity or a flock of such horrors from beyond the Fall.

Those adults that are joining the Talon Conclave must undergo this Trial as well, though the circumstances of them may change. Rare is a Trial that must be undergone alone -- at least a group of three must take this Trial. Special dispensations may be made for a Talonite to help an untaloned through their Sacrament.

A Talonite Overseer supervises the Trial to ensure the least amount of casualties -- although these do happen. The deceased are posthumously treated as true Talonites… the lost are simply considered so until found. Furthermore, there are ceremonial rites to consecrate the hunt before and after such Trials, though their actual nature depends on the Chapter and the overseer.

Failure in a Trial is an uncommon occurrence but it does happen. Those who fail the Trial must perform a re-consecration ritual and may try anew after a few months or years of re-training. Some resign themselves to becoming Makers. A few Chapters are said to execute failures, but those practices are frowned upon by the Conclave and Chapter leaders are punished when their indiscretions are discovered.

Success and survival through three such hunts awards a Novitiate full membership as a Talonite. Though the ceremony involved differs with each Chapter, all gift the new Talonite with a ceremonial dagger that represents their new status as a weapon of the God-Empress and her Holy Temple. The remainder of the rite may involve a feast, a prayer, an execution, ritual combat, and/or other ceremonies.

Trial of Conjunction

The Trial of Conjunction is a Sacrament that must be endured by those who wish to join a Chapter and leave their current one. It is very similar to the Trial of Talon in that a prospective Talonite must hunt a monstrous foe under the oversight of the Chapter they wish to join. However, there is only one hunt and there are tasks that must be performed before the hunt is done.

The prospective Talonite will enact the hunt with the assistance of their new brethren. However, these individuals are there not only to assist but to judge their would-be comrade-in-arms. Performing poorly or being uncooperative is ill-regarded by most Chapters and can result in the rejection of the would be member even if the hunt was successful.

Trial of Truth

This is less a ceremony of passage and more a right that can be demanded -- the Trial of Truth can be requested by an accused party, almost identical to a Trial by Combat. This is a straightforward yet sacred affair wherein an accused individual with the support of four to six individuals outside their Warband or Chapter may fight the Champions or proxies of the law.

This requires that the presiding judge accept the accused’s request for a Trial of Truth and in practice, this only occurs when there is not enough evidence to convict the defendant. Said individual must also have enough popular support from outside factions to achieve this. That said, if the accused loses, those who sought to help them also share their fate.

Sacrament of Respite

This Sacrament is the equivalent of a funeral among the Talon Conclave. It is a simplistic one, colored by the grim lives led by this militaristic culture.

In this ceremony, the body and Talonic Dagger (if they have one) of the deceased is burned. While the flames raze the prepared flesh of the fallen hero, their Warband or a leader among their Chapter or Conclave reads aloud their heroic deeds and prays aloud for the God-Empress’ mercy and protection. Allies and comrades of the deceased may choose to speak their own stories and fondness for the fallen soldier. The officiant ends the Sacrament by praying to the Goddess of All to give the deceased their deserved rest. The ashes of the fallen are then kept in an urn to be kept at their Chapter’s headquarters.

If the flame is insufficient to burn the bones of the deceased, the corpse can be prepared with a special salve to assist in the destruction of the bones. Without this, the bones must be crushed and powdered so that they fit the urn in internment.

In times of war, disaster, or mass casualties, Talonites are burned en masse in a huge funeral pyre with chemicals or magics expended to ensure that even their bones are burnt to nothing. While the pyre burns, one or more officiants speaks of the individuals and their service to the God-Empress. Each fallen Talonite is commemorated and celebrated until all have been mentioned -- this otherwise ends as the rite above..In lieu of a funerary urn, an individual’s Talonic Dagger or a similar representative token are interned at their Chapter’s headquarters in a cenotaph (a bodiless grave).

Disgraced Talonites are decapitated, their bodies left to rot in the wilderness. Their heads grace the local places of law, spiked and upon poles so that all may know the face of sin and dishonor.

Views of the Afterlife

Temple Dogma describes life after death as one wherein the human spirit is devoured by latent Abyssal essences in the land or fading into peaceful oblivion. The Ravening not only brought immense changes to physical reality in the form of etheric phenomenon and otherworldly horrors, but the realm of death has also been altered.

The only way to avoid this terrible fate is to undergo the Sacrament of Awakening or the Sacrament of Junction, wherein one’s spirit is marked by the God-Empress as one of her Chosen souls. Upon death, this spirit joins with its fellow Templar and with the God-Empress in eternal harmony. The Sacrament of Respite makes certain of this journey to the World Dragon and prevents interference from the Abyssals or other Necrotic entities.

Talonite Perspective: Though unratified by the Oracle-Avatar, it is a common belief among the Talonites that this harmony strengthens the God-Empress for Her eventual last battle against the Abyssals. Heroic and holy warriors among the Temple are allowed to be reborn into the living world as Talonites to continue their side of the battle.

View of Magic

Like many within the Temple, magic is viewed as a gift of the Empress to humanity, allowing them to strike out at Her enemies. This gift is a double edged sword however -- the Empress’ gift was access to the Etheric Spheres of sorcery and witchcraft, which are primal elements of the universe, much like gravity and physics. The Earth-Mother’s beneficence does not extend toward protecting Her children from the ravages of wielding such energies or warding them from the dangerous aspects of Thergy. As She has given humanity free will, so too does She grant them the capacity to harm themselves using this terrifying, yet sacred gift.

Talon Conclave Society

Though a casual onlooker might think that the Talon Conclave rewards the rule of the strong over the weak, this is patently simplistic. Talonites view strength in multiple spectrums, though there is a bias toward martial prowess. In their worldview, true prestige is awarded to those who are skilled, work well with their fellows, and bring glory to their God-Empress.

Social Strata

The Conclave’s Archon is called the Talon-Archon and their word is law, supported by the Talonic Synod beneath them and the Oracle-Avatar above them. Their rule is supported by Invokates of the Synod, who administer the rulings to Hierophants. Beneath the Hierophants are the majority of the Conclave, which includes a civilian social class called the Untaloned or Makers.

Makers/UnTaloned: Noncombatant part of the Conclave - laborers and craftsfolk

  • Apprentice: These individuals are trainees and novices on their path to becoming Artisans of their craft. They are the equivalent of Novitiates..

  • Artisan: Individuals whose products and services have been tried and tested.

  • Expert: A rank granted by the local Grandmaster of that craft that commends the quality of their goods or services. This requires several years of work.

  • Master: A rank granted by the local Grandmaster after several years of Expert workmanship, related to the quality of their goods or services.

  • Grandmaster: Usually part of the leadership of a Maker Guild or Company. These are still considered subservient to a Chaptermaster or a Hierophant.

The Talonites: Pious soldiers -- trained for battle and raised in faith.

  • Novitiate : Untested Talonites who have yet to complete the Trial of Talons.

  • Talonite: Rank and file soldier who has passed their Trial of Talons. This has specific grades of ascension with 3rd class being the lowest and 1st class being the highest. These ranks are colloqually known as Kite Talonite, Hawk Talonite, and Eagle Talonite

  • Apostle: A soldier bloodied and commended for several battles. In a minor position of authority within their Chapter. This title has specific grades of ascension, with 3rd class being the lowest and 1st class being the highest. These ranks are colloquially known as Lynx Apostle, Wolf Apostle, and Bear Apostle. Most Talonites stay in this rank or become a Chaplain.

  • Chaplain: A soldier in a position of authority within their Chapter and with knowledge of various religious rites. The latter is especially important in the theocracy of the Talon Conclave.

  • Prelate: A soldier in a position of authority over several Apostles and Chaplains. This is the highest Player Character position without retiring their character. Usually, the Chaptermaster of their Chapter, if they’re the highest ranking member of their Chapter.

  • Hierophant: A religious administrator-general in charge of a small region, managing multiple Prelate. Usually, the Chaptermaster of their Chapter, if they’re the highest ranking member of their Chapter. This is the highest position a retired player character may gain.

  • Invokate: A religious administrator-general in charge of a major territory. An Archon is considered to be the Invokate of their region, though common practice is to assign a Hierophant to assist with most administrative matters. Usually, the Chaptermaster of their Chapter, if they’re the highest ranking member of their Chapter.

  • Archon: The highest rank in a Conclave -- only the Oracle-Avatar themselves may gainsay their commandments. Their replacements are recommended by the current Archon, but are ultimately chosen by the Invokates -- typically from among their own numbers. Also chosen is a replacement Invokate, whose Chapter will be uplifted with their leader. The Talon-Archon makes decisions with input from the Talonite Synod and can veto Synod rulings.

The Talonite Synod is currently comprised of the following Chapters: Dragontooth (Archonic), Iron Chalice, Godhammer, Ghost Wolf, Sin-Eater, Sea Serpent, Wall Warden

Outcasts: Bandits, thieves, beggars, and scavengers are the first individuals that come to mind, as do some Evictus.

The Chapter

The Chapter is a major social structure within the Talon Conclave, it is their family unit, their squad, and their commanding unit. In the war-like society of the Talons, the Chapter is where most learn their skills, ascend the ranks, and are remembered in battle. Transferring between Chapters requires only the permission of the receiving Chapter, but this is an uncommon practice and sometimes results in a negative relationship between the two.

A Chapter is formed by the command of the Talon-Archon, a Hierophant, or an Invokate. Usually, this creation is built upon the need for one but Chapterhood can be awarded to a small group for a feat of great utility to the Conclave or Temple. The creation of a Chapter also comes with a grant of some land where their primary “Chapterhouse” is built. Similarly, Chapters may spawn other Chapters with positive relationships between the “parent” Chapter and their scion. Chapters may also split into two or more Chapters, though this tends to be less benign than a parental-scion relationship.

The Untaloned

Called Makers, or Hoofs (Pejorative), it is easy to believe that the UnTaloned are a slave caste to their warrior counterparts. In truth, the status of “Maker” can be more akin to that of a non-combatant Civilian. Such individuals are not slaves, but they are expected to perform tasks or duties for the Temple in exchange for food, shelter, clothing, and currency. Most Talon territories are ruled by a Chapter, who handles the logistics and compensation of Makers within their area of responsibility.

A Maker’s place on the social ladder is dependent on three things: what they do, how well they do it, and who they do it for. In most territories, the highest ranking Makers in a Talonite territory are those Grandmaster artisans who provide essential supplies, services, and equipment to that territory’s dominant Chapter. Thanks to the influence of Saint Talon’s love of poetry and calligraphy, art and artistry are of high demand in Talon territories, sometimes even rivaling their more practical counterparts.

In a similar vein, Makers will find high respect from Talonites when it comes to that Maker’s domain of expertise. Regardless of their own battle-skill and triumphs, it is a foolish Templar that does not listen to a carpenter’s opinion about a wall’s fortitude or a farmer’s thoughts on how much food the community needs to survive. That said, a Talonite expects similar deference from a Maker when it comes to war, battle, and survival -- especially when it concerns the Talonite’s ability to protect the Maker.  Bankers and merchants are considered necessary but indecent in Talonite  society -- their tasks rely solely on the sweat and effort of others, without work of their own.

Those not of the Talon Conclave, including the Carmine Templars may be considered Makers and treated as such, depending on each individual person. Those who are less than Makers (e.g. outlaws, brigands, state enemies), are considered prey and rarely treated with anything higher than caution or apathy. On the other hand, Skull Templars are always treated with deference.

The Talonite

The word Talonite is not only a rank within the Conclave, but it also reflects a soldier who has passed their Trials and become a weapon for the Temple of the Shattered Mother.  They become a member of good standing and repute with the Conclave, this is but the first step of many.

Soon after passing one’s Trials, a newly forged Talonite is often sent to their first deployment. Some Chapters actually allow their Talonites some choice in the matter but most do not, assigning deployments out of their current need and the skillset of their soldier.  This is usually an assignment within their Chapter reserved for low-ranking soldiers such as guard duty or patrols, allowing for further training before being sent out on scouting missions, assault missions, or escort assignments.

On rare occasions, new Talonites are sent on extended deployments. These may have less specific but no less important objectives, such as maintaining influence in a region or ensuring a VIP’s security. Similarly, a Talonite may be “loaned” to another Chapter or to another Conclave to assist in the Temple’s own objectives in a region -- these extended deployments usually have an amount of time assigned to them which may be extended by the needs of the mission or the whims of the Talonite’s Chapter.

Oftentimes, it is newer Templars that are sent out on extended deployments rather than seasoned Templars, with the exception of those Talonites that appear to enjoy or prefer being away from the Chapterhouse.

Success at an objective is expected, but superior performance is especially rewarded-- especially when it comes to aiding the Conclave and the Temple as a whole. This can come in the form of monetary awards or promotions. On very rare instances, heroic feats and triumphs may result in the creation of a new Chapter for a group of skilled and victorious Talonites.

The Evictus

Those who lose their Chapter are called “Evictus”, more colloquially, “Stumps”. This may occur by being evicted from a Chapter for disobedience or wrongdoing. This may also occur to those individuals who are the sole survivors of their Chapter’s destruction. Stumps may find themselves in dire straits within the views of the Talonite society. Fortunate Evictus may be enlisted into a different Chapter. Less fortunate Evictus end up displaced, working as mercenaries for deadly or unprestigious assignments.

Upbringing

The Creche is a central point of a Chapter’s ongoings. It is both a day-care and their educational center, akin to a military academy. It is customary for Talonite and Maker parents to leave their children in their Chapter’s Creche as soon as they are able to, though some keep their children with them until 6 years of age. This serves two purposes: to allow a parent to return to their duties and to allow experienced individuals to educate the new generation. Most parents visit when they are able.

Every Chapter has its own Creche. Under the auspices of the Conclave or the regional Hierophant, both Talonites and Makers assist in the upbringing of young individuals.

When the children are older, Creches will distinguish between the Maker children and the Talonite children. At this stage, their education will diverge with the former receiving apprenticeships and the latter receiving martial training. Unless sponsored by a Talonite, the child of a Maker may not choose to become a warrior -- on the other hand, Talonite children may choose to become Maker apprentices or become a Novitiate (a would-be Talonite).

The Trial of Talons

The Trial of Talons is a Sacramental rite that must be undertaken and survived three times -- one that proves not only that they are an adult but also that they are a worthy soldier for the Conclave. In each Trial, a group of Novitiates (5-10 individuals that are at least 18 years old) must successfully hunt down a horrific monstrosity or a flock of such horrors from beyond the Fall.

Those adults that are joining the Talon Conclave must undergo this Trial as well, though the circumstances of them may change. Rare is a Trial that must be undergone alone -- at least a group of three must take this Trial. Special dispensations may be made for a Talonite to help a non-Taloned through their Trial.

More details about this Rite can be found in the Talon Conclave Religion and Rites page.

Stigmata in the Talon Conclave

Half of the Conclave do not have any Stigmata. Of those that do, most are of the Chimeric or Seraphic persuasion and have no problems with the frigid cold of their homeland. Many of those in the frontlines boast of Necrotic Grafts and terrible Grave-Scars, they tend to be proud of their struggles and their endurance rather than ashamed of them. Psions, Metabionic, and Eidolonic Stigmata are very rare, with Golems being almost non-existent except for a few recruits post-Ember War.

As it is with most of the Temple, there is no shame in having Stigmata or having none. The Temple accepts all who are willing to serve and willing to fight for the God-Empress.

In truth, majority of those in higher positions tend to be Chimeras or Seraphs due to the prevalence of those bloodlines among the first initiates of the Temple as well as their physical advantages. The fact that an non-Stigged individual must be more daring and more skilled to compete with their peers is known but unspoken.

Law and Sin

Within a territory, the dominant Chaptermaster is law, only superseded by their Archon, by a Prelate of the Sin-Eater Chapter, or by the Oracle-Avatar themselves. Special considerations are given to those high ranking members of the Skull Conclave though the Carmine Conclave is denied this respect.

The following are the six Arch-Sins that constitute a criminal act with the Talon Conclave: Heresy, Blasphemy, Defilement, Malifica, Malfeasance, and Treachery. What each act denotes can be found in the Religion and Rites section.

Commiting a Sin: When a Sin is committed, a Sinner is expected to remand themselves to the nearest Templar authority for punishment. Alternatively, they may be pursued by local Templar authorities, depending on the severity of the Sin. These same authorities also determine whether a Sin has been committed or not, gathering evidence and witnesses accordingly through practical and magical means.

The highest Talonite authority of their territory determines their guilt or innocence of the Sin, guided by evidence, witnesses, and faith. This tends to be a closed affair, with only the judge, the accused and their party, and the accusers or prosecutors (and their party) in session.

Minor transgressions that have been self-reported may not even require a full tribunal, only monetary penance or corporal penance. Major transgressions may involve worse punishments such as execution, demotion, banishment, or forced conscription to the Blockade or the Quarry.

Particularly egregious Sins, such as Heresy, may result in a type of execution called a “Eldritch Crucifixion” wherein a powerful ritual is placed upon an individual that kills them and affixes their spiritual essence to an effigy -- when done in Ziggurat City, this is said to prevent any type of resurrection and to allow for further torment at the hands of the Skull Conclave.

Talonite Territories

Talonic Citadel

The eponymous Talonic Citadel is at the heart of the region as well as a major trading port. It is surrounded by farmland, fishing villages, and a handful of forge-towns. Its edges are dotted with watchtowers and mines. The fortress town of Copperglen marks the borders between Citadel territory, the Beringian Blockade, and the Path of Talons.

Path of Talons

A vast network of roads that carve a path through mountain, taiga, and tundra from Ziggurat City to the Talonic Citadel. The use of Shadow Doors has not lessened the use of these roads, which are always under threat from para-fauna and other dangerous creatures. Five Rivers, Greyhorn, Tenan Cross and Fort Tetlin are the biggest fortress towns in the territory. Of course, this does not include Oxtown which contains the Chapterhouse of the Ghost-Wolves and is a major portion of the Path of Talons and the Path of Flames.

Path of Flames

A network of roads that carve a path westward from Ziggurat City to the Superior Sea. Oxtown lairs the Chapterhouse of the Ghost-Wolves. From there, the Path of Flames leads to Crownshearth, Westgate, Thunderhall, and terminates at Beacon. Formerly the Flame Conclave’s headquarters, this fortress marks the border between Carmine territory and Talon territory.

The Beringian Blockade

The Blockade protects a gap in the mountain range, assisted by watchtowers and other walled fortresses. Together, these defend the Temple and the Talon Conclave from invasion from the Auroral Wastelands to the west. The Blockade itself is a walled city that serves as the operational headquarters for the Wall-Warden Chapter as well as the heart of their power base. There are a few farming communities nearby and a scattering of mining communities in various mountains. A few fortress towns lend shelter to travelers and troops on the road to Copperglen and the Path of Talons.

Kookesh Quarry

A territory situated far to the north and east of the Talonic Citadel. This is the cadaver of a titanic entity, big enough to flatten trees and a mountain from its impact. Its alien flesh and the crystallized earth beneath it are valuable resources that have been mined and fought over for decades. Criminals and desperate folk excavate these components from the ground, under the watchful eye of the Talon Conclave.

Port Sacrament

Adjacent to the Sacrament Sea, this sizable port town is shared with the Carmine Conclave. From here, the Talonites can lend defensive assistance against any further Pelagic attacks while the Carminians assist in managing trade and industry of the surrounding region. This sphere of influence also includes nearby fishing villages and survivor towns.

Innsmouth

Innsmouth and its surrounding regions have been awarded to the Talon Conclave to allow the Temple a greater measure of influence in the east coast and the Mid-Atlantic region. Largely populated by Seraphs, it is a place marked by eldritch crossings and supernatural power now contained with the assistance of the Oracle-Avatar themselves -- a Shadow Door is stationed here, allowing direct (and painful) passage to Ziggurat City. The Calvarians have a small but significant presence in this town.
